Recently the phone rang at Rita Ora’s management and the caller said, “Prince would love to speak to Rita,” recalls Rita in her cover story interview appearing in the April 2014 issue of Paper. Astonished, Rita wonders aloud, “Wait, like the actual Prince? The Prince of Wales?” Given the meteoric rise of the British singer-songwriter, Rita’s question does not seem altogether misplaced. As it turns out, the call came from that other Prince, the brilliant multi-instrumentalist genius from Minneapolis. The reason, he simply wanted to make music with Rita.
Rita is readying to release her first album Stateside and second overall. Conquering America, daunting as that might sound, doesn’t seem to phase Rita, however. “I just can’t wait for it because we have so much more to play with now. The first tour was obviously just me and the band and I was new and now I’m new again, but in another part of the world and we have dancers and loads of decorations and things you’ve never seen before. I don’t want to give too much away but it’s like a completely different planet.”
In May Rita will release the album’s first single, produced by Calvin Harris. To read Rita’s full interview by DJ Nick Grimshaw, please visit Papermag.com.
