A 1948 photograph by Cecil Beaton of models wearing gowns by Charles James that ran in Vogue serves as the inspiration behind this Tim Walker portrait featuring Maja Salamon, Ola Rudnicka, and Esmeralda Seay-Reynolds that appears in the publication’s May 2014 issue. Opening next month at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the Costume Institute’s retrospective exhibition Charles James: Beyond Fashion, which Hamish Bowles previews for this story. Maja, Ola, and Esmeralda are all pictured wearing paper dresses and jewelry created by Rhea Thierstein.
