There is an idea that persists in some quarters that maintains celebrities are “just like us.” Sure, they occasionally appear in photos stepping out of grocery stores, reading pulp novels on beaches, or even, gasp, riding bicycles. The shared experience, quaint as it is, often ends there and typically does not extend to the distant shores of Ibiza or the estates of Monaco. The “just like us” editorial conceit is turned on its head in the September 2014 issue of W in a story featuring Suvi Koponen and Meghan Collison amongst a cast of leading models photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Titled “Super Normal Super Models,” this Edward Enninful-styled story takes up the trend of normcore, that commitment to understated basics “normal” folk have been unconsciously wearing since the early 1990s. There is a certain 1992 look about this story that has as much to do with the unpretentious looks as it does the supers who are wearing them as they did when House of Style was at its peak on MTV. Suvi and Meghan are just like us, then, only taller, more beautiful, and in the September issue of W.
