Earlier this month Anja Rubik launched the third issue of her impressive biannual 25, taking narcissism as its controlling theme. “I’ve asked some talented contributors to interpret the multifaceted subject, from the destructive, to the controversial, to the beautiful,” explained Rubik in the editor’s note. Chief amongst the contributors is photographer, artist, and Saint Laurent creative director Hedi Slimane, whose 22-page photo essay starring Abbey Lee Kershaw is nothing short of arresting.

Titled “Abbey and Jamie Summer 2013,” the intimate series is remarkable for the unvarnished treatment of its subjects, who all the same look naturally beautiful, unencumbered by the trappings typically associated with PR-sanctioned fashion editorials. Despite the intimacy of the portraits, at no point do Abbey and Jamie ever occupy the same frame and yet after nearly two dozen pages it is nigh impossible to uncouple the pair from one another in the mind’s eye. The juxtaposition of portraits on either side of the issue’s thick binding in fact creates the illusion of togetherness. What is seen here, moreover is the work of a fine artist and models in Abbey Lee Kershaw and her male counterpart capable of realizing that vision.
