PARIS — A belief in alien abduction, believe it or not, is not required to appreciate the capturing of imaginations (and bodies) en masse that took place Saturday night at the anachronistic Espace Oscar Niemeyer, the historic French Communist Party headquarters, by one Jean Paul Gaultier for the presentation of his women’s Fall 2014 ready-to-wear collection. If the scale was cosmic, and it certainly was (a sprawling, five-section runway under low ceilings with myriad angled turns, stops, inclines, and blind alleys alone suggest as much), then the presentation was human. The delivery was cheeky, celebratory, and downright fun. On the evening Thairine García, Ola Rudnicka, Binx, Sabrina Ioffreda, and Lily McMenamy all featured looks on the runway. The latter in was so clearly moved by the encounter of the evening that she is filmed joyously singing “There’s a Hole in My Bucket.” As you do. The night belonged to Jean Paul Gaultier and we doff our space helmets to the sagely astronaute for bringing the heavens just a little bit closer to earth.
