There comes a point in publishing when a hard cover and binding is less an aesthetic decision than an existential choice. Either bind those pages in between two rigid covers or risk the contents of the volume spilling on the floor. The Fall / Winter 2014 issue of Self Service like the 40 that have come before it of course opts for a hard cover and those readers who are familiar with the brilliance of publisher and founder Ezra Petronio know why — voluminous fashion! Case in point is the sprawling look at the Fall 2014 ready-to-wear collections by photographer Walter Pfeiffer and stylist Suzanne Koller featuring Malgosia Bela and Lily McMenamy. Shot over four days in May of this year at a trio of architectural triumphs including Villa Savoye, Maison du Brésil, and Pavillon Suisse, the story imagines the fall collections through a series of compositions that consist of the grandiose and abstract. Whether it is Malgosia alluring laid out in a Mongolian fur coat by Sonia Rykiel (pictured) or Lily holding her arms aloft in a balletic stretch wearing a zebra-print knitted dress from Balmain, every frame of “The Obsessions” will have readers duly possessed by the hard cover volume set before them.
