The etymology of the term beast can be traced to its latin root, which is bestia. The French later made it beste before the word worked its way into Middle English as beast. What’s more, the contemporary expression beast mode dizzingly jumps ahead the word’s meaning several further generations. The foundation of all these terms, though is an raw strength capable of brut force. Enter John Todd, who appears in the Fall / Winter 2014 issue of Numéro Homme China in a story by photographer Hong Jang Hyun and stylist Christian Stroble. The 12-page story, whose Chinese title translates as “Beast,” unleashes a full-strength John on the page wearing the latest menswear offerings in fur and leather for this season. There is plenty to admire about this story, but at the root of all the admiration is none other than John Todd.
