“My image was not a ‘happy rose’ feeling,” says Rei Kawakubo in the forthcoming issue of LOVE. “It was the roses that appeared a long time ago in connection with political and / or religious upheaval — in short, the images of roses that accompanied blood.” Even a passing glance at the Comme des Garçons story in LOVE Spring / Summer 2015 starring Grace Hartzel will disabuse anyone of the notion the red of Kawakubo’s spring collection has any sort of tie-in to Valentine’s Day. Photographed by Mario Sorrenti and styled by Panos Yiapanis, the story is an arresting tribute to this most visceral ready-to-wear collection. Grace herself brings to life two looks, the first (pictured) is a red polyurethane overall, cotton lining dress, nylon socks, and red leather shoes with transparent polka dots and the second, a red cotton polyester Roses jacket. This is red at its most intense, which makes Grace’s appearance on the page all the more fitting.
