Rock & roll and all the decadence that came with it when traveling musicians were lavished with everything their tour riders demanded however preposterous has long captured the popular imagination. Anecdotes abound, but suffice it to say that however brief leasing terms of a private Boeing passenger jet to quartet of English rockers touring North America in the mid 1970s, the aftershocks felt in the decades to follow would be considerable. The March 2015 issue of Interview celebrates rock & roll extravagance much closer to sea level in a story photographed by Mikael Jansson and styled by Karl Templer that features amongst others Georgia Hilmer and Lili Sumner. If the girls are not eight miles high in the Federal Aviation Administration sense of the term, then everything else about them is. “Lonely Hearts Club” explores the peculiar institution of rock & roll decadence set against others the chasmic emptiness of the 38-room Beaux-Arts mansion in New Jersey known as Blairsden. The richness in all its glittery grittiness is palpable down to the photographic grain and sequin thread. This Lonely Hearts Club might be invitation only, but Georgia and Lili are sure to inspire fan clubs of their own.
