Location and staging can often become impediments to photographer and subject. The crystal waters of Fiji or the glow of Tokyo’s Shibuya are all well and good, but in the extreme can distract when it comes to the clothing and, well, let’s be frank, the models. The latest issue of Self Service dispenses with the trappings of location to clear ample space for photographer Mario Sorrenti to connect with his subjects amongst whom include Grace Hartzel. Other than some of the industry’s most sumptuous lighting and the odd floral arrangement, there is Grace and only Grace in all her quiet glory wearing a blue crepe dress by Chloe and vintage platform boots (pictured above). The portraits are remarkable for their simplicity. There is nothing contrived let alone hurried about either shot, these frames are as true and matter-of-fact as the story’s title, “New York, November 13th-14th, 2014.” And so it was, Grace by Mario Sorrenti over a couple days in November. How’s that for location?
