The growing popularity of the monopod especially designed to accommodate a smartphone is either confirmation that civilization as we know it has reached its nadir or will do so in only a matter of time very, very soon. This pessimism over the so-called selfie stick thankfully is not shared in the June 2015 issue of Vogue Italia in a story by Steven Klein featuring the ever stunning Anna Cleveland. The story opens with Anna holding the telescopic device (pictured) in an obvious nod to its popularity in China, which is celebrated throughout The China Issue (中国特刊). To be sure, the story is not about selfie sticks as much as it is about maximalist fashion in the hyper digital age smack at the dawn of what many consider to be the Chinese Century. This historical moment is without a question fraught, but could not look any more thrilling than it does in Anna Cleveland’s likeness rendered so evocatively by Steven Klein.
