“I use real butter, real sugar. No substitutions.” Meet Amirah Kassem, unapologetic proprietor of Flour Shop and creator of custom cakes and other sugary sensations, who is featured in the August 2015 issue of Interview. Amirah started her business in earnest in 2012 out of her apartment in Brooklyn and in a short time has garnered a clientele that is as devoted as it is esteemed. Part of what makes Amirah and her tasty creations so irresistible in a marketplace awash in this and the other latest foodie trend is her honesty. Those in the market for gluten-free this or kale that can “go somewhere else.” She continues, “What I do is give people a chance to relive their childhoods — those colors, those flavors.” At the heart of it, Amirah makes damn fine cakes, which have caught the eyes of the types of people who buy advertising in Interview.
