NEW YORK — Joseph Altuzarra set out to explore his Basque heritage in his collection for Spring / Summer 2016. The Basque region of Europe, which in recent centuries has been overlaid by the national boundaries of France and Spain, is home to a people who are fiercely independent. This independence is manifest what Altuzarra describes as “the inherent beauty of the materials and crafts of the region, and the ease and humility it exuded.” To merely say this collection was beautifully refined with a softness of touch afforded only by the likes of textured linen would of course be an admission of the limits of language. Frankly speaking, the collection was so much more, the very sort that cannot be easily defined any more than the international borders of Basque Country can be charted. On the afternoon Binx, Georgia Hilmer, Hedvig Palm, Liza O (pictured), and Shu-Pei Qin all featured on the runway.
