MILAN — Any carbon-based lifeforms that were dithering by the time Philipp Plein’s Spring / Summer 2016 runway got underway (following a nearly 60-minute delay) would have benefited from a little machine assistance. As it was, Philipp Plein was reportedly racing against the clock to get up and running a conveyor-belt runway, mechanical arms, an array of lasers, complement of drones, machine musicians, and one Courtney Love. All were marshaled to drive home Plein’s thesis-cum-spectacle that technology is essential for survival. If the mechanical technologies present for Wednesday evening’s late show proved something of a challenge for programming, then the two human beings including Pyper America and Yana Dobroliubova set to open and close the show respectively were anything but. Pyper was thrilled at the prospect of opening such a sensational show and especially for a brand in which her brother Lucky Blue features in the campaign. Russian beauty Yana calls to mind Ilia from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and as such was the perfect casting for the closing role on a sensational first day of fashion week in Milan.
