The connection between Cuba and Ukraine goes back decades, albeit through the historical federation that was the Soviet Union, which of course included Ukraine along with 14 other republics. When Soviet Premier Nikita Kruschev was keen on a strategic windup of his opposite number in Washington DC, John F. Kennedy, he stocked none other than Cuba with ballistic missiles. Never mind the ensuing crisis that put the planet mere ticks from midnight, the connection was solidified then and today is more than sufficient for a soft lead to the July 2016 cover of Vogue Ukraine featuring beauties Anais Mali and Riley Montana photographed by Hans Neumann in, wait for it, Havana. The breathtaking cover broke today on Instagram and pictures the pair dressed in Dior with a vintage automobile for which the Cuban capital is well known. It’s a fine cover, ideally suited for summer, and a convenient opportunity to explore the intersection of high fashion and nuclear arms control, however tenuous.
