Page through any forthcoming glossy in the coming weeks and you could be forgiven for thinking the Sonia Rykiel advertising campaign for Fall 2016 starring Grace Hartzel was actually staged in Paris. If memory serves, and surely it does, the Eiffel Tower figures in the campaign by photographer Glen Luchford, but look a little closer and it is actually only the likeness of the world famous wrought iron structure sat on the Champ de Mars in Paris. Grace is instead pictured on the a hotel rooftop in Queens of all places, but is styled by Camilla Nickerson in a way that makes this sleight of hand so effective. That it is a copy of the Eiffel Tower and not the thing itself makes for a more sophisticated message, which is the essence of all things Sonia Rykiel. “We wanted to reproduce the spirit of Paris,” said creative director Julie de Libran speaking with WWD. “I felt this exaggerated image was quite straightforward, playful and surprising, as is the Rykiel woman.”
