Admittedly some things in life need dressing up. Maybe it’s a capsule collection or even a comedian’s vanity music project. Whatever the case, there is one September cover that requires no such dressing up as it speaks volumes for itself. Enter the September 2016 issue of L’Officiel Paris featuring a host of models of color including Anais Mali and Riley Montana photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth. “Gang of Africa,” proclaims the headline and although there is nothing criminal about this group, there is a wealth of organization in service of the continent on which modern Homo sapiens first appeared over 200 thousand years ago. Viva Africa, in other words, thousands of years in the making.
