NEW YORK — An election year can do funny things to the news cycle, but rarely does that silliness ever penetrate the gilded bubble surrounding the world of high fashion. The folks at Opening Ceremony, however have always enjoyed a stature that is both in that world, but crucially not of it. Creative directors Carol Lim and Humberto Leon gave this freedom full voice Sunday night at the Javits Center for their “Pageant of the People,” a runway extravaganza fêting the Fall II & Winter 2016 collection. The quirky runway format hosted by Portlandia duo Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen interspersed models including show opener Selena Forrest as well as Julie Hoomans, Lina Hoss, Maria Clara, and Impy with special celebrity guests including the likes of Rashida Jones, Aubrey Plaza, and Whoopi Goldberg. Selena in particular geeked out sharing the catwalk with Goldberg, a comedy legend whom she holds in high esteem. “Whoopi ‘Whoop That Ass’ Goldberg,” exclaimed a beaming Selena backstage posing for photographers with left her arm around the star who was standing next to Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza. If the show was tongue-and-cheek, the designers emphasized that the high stakes facing the nation this November during the general election were not. “Tonight’s pageant has no judges,” said the designers. “We invite you to caste a ballot at the polls on November 8th.”
