LONDON — Flowers in spring, novel as this concept might soon be in a world where climate change brings about this sort of manifestation in the winter, they still occupy a traditional seasonal trope for designer Paul Smith. His women’s collection for Spring 2017 drew upon hand-drawn flowers, some even lovingly done in crayon, as a means to express friendship. Theses flowers were no mere trifling embellishment, but realized in a manner that took cues from artist Hilma Af Klint’s recent exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery at Kensington Gardens, a site near and dear to the designer for his own runway shows. Flowers, then are never overly feminine, but have a mechanical elegance. The result was an impressive collection, one which held the eye and would not let go. On the evening seven models from across the Next network including, Lia Pavlova, Maria Clara, Impy, Tessa Bruinsma, Yana Van Ginneken, Leila Goldkuhl and Alanna Arrington featured in the runway show.
