LONDON — “It’s like fashion sportswear,” said Alanna Arrington backstage as she was being dressed for the Joseph Spring / Summer 2017 runway show late afternoon at at warehouse in Lambeth. The operative word in Alanna’s description of course is fashion, which meant that none of these heavily layered, wholly deconstructed sportswear-inflected looks would likely have dressed Team GB at Rio 2016 this summer. Which is just as well because Joseph Creative Director Louise Trotter’s “unravelling nomad” is simply in a class all her own, wearing what show closer Impy simply and succinctly described as “so much clothes.” Also walking in the show from across the Next network were Lia Pavlova, Klementyna DmowskaOlivia Jansing, and Leila Goldkuhl. There were lots of pieces and parts to these looks comprised of nylon, tracksuit acrylics, bits of canvas, straps, zips, fringe, you name it. The sum total of it all came together in a purposeful program set to a percussive soundtrack of Japanese drummers, which made for the perfect send off from London as our Spring 2017 ready-to-wear coverage heads south to Milan.
