These days any excuse will suffice to put Demna Gvasalia’s name in a headline. Fact is, the Balenciaga and Vetements creative is not only talented, but also has shrewdly cultivated a devoted, almost cult-like following that includes likes of fellow designers and cultural figures with five-star street credibility. The Fall 2016 issue of i-D celebrates at the Georgian-born designer’s rise in a story photographed by Suffo Moncloa featuring none other than Lina Hoss. Before undertaking his first collection for Balenciaga, Gvasalia extensively researched the house archives including every collection from designer from Alexander Wang back to founder Cristobal Balenciaga to discover where to go himself. Where he has gone is some place where even tailored coats can be sexy (pictured). Leave the rest to Lina, she illustrates for Demna Gvasalia what words, even the sort difficult to pronounce, simply cannot.
