The first phase of storied Second Avenue Subway is slated for conclusion on the final day of 2016. Whether or not that phase is completed is anyone’s guess, but the work will be nonstop between now and then in what has been a massive infrastructure overhaul, the first of its kind in a half century. The Subway is news today, but like its more than 840 miles of track, its influence extends much further into popular culture and the Winter 2016 issue of i-D is no exception. Crack the spine and page toward the back and there is a somewhat Subway story by photographer Daniel Jackson and stylist Alastair McKimm starring Hiandra Martinez. The face of the current Saint Laurent advertising campaign is pictured aboard what is very likely an E train wearing some of the coming seasons’s most sizzling, if not outright urban looks. Hindra wears cornrow braids as usual (pictured) and is shown wearing a dress and jewelry from Maria Grazia Chiuri’s inaugural Dior collection. There is a real tension present in the pictures between undeniable elegance and the ordinary, everyday of the train. Will the Second Avenue Subway’s proverbial train come in by New Year? Who can really say, fact is, it’s Hiandra who is definitely holding all cards.
