LONDON — Walt Disney’s Fantasia (1940) is widely known to have been a critical and commercial failure at the time of its release. Posterity has done wonders for the film, an ambitious marriage of classical music and then state-of-the-art animation. Mary Katrantzou gave the now 77-year-old motion picture fresh legs for her Fall / Winter 2017 ready-to-wear collection, shown early Sunday evening at the Topshop Showspace at London Fashion Week situated inside the Tate Modern. Details from Fantasia, including landscapes, characters, and more could be seen in the intricately embroidered gowns, many of which were feverishly receiving final stitches during the lead up to the show. Old Walt knew the power of wedding moving image to sound as did the talented Greek designer, who had members the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra on hand to play live arrangements during the runway show. The resulting amalgam was positively riveting, not unlike Fantasia all these years later. On the night eight models from across the Next network featured in the runway show including Lineisy Montero, Wangy, Leila Zandonai, Leila Goldkuhl, Julie Hoomans, Lia Pavlova, Tessa Bruinsma, and Ania Chiz.
