Without going down the Friday afternoon rabbit hole that could be the 1986 John Hughes classic Pretty in Pink, suffice it to say any film boasting a cast that includes Harry Dean Stanton and a title song by Psychedelic Furs is worthy of examination. And when the VHS tape is rewound, reexamination. That the phrase “pretty in pink” immediately calls to mind this retro junk is a testament to its lasting power, which brings us to the August 2017 issue of Vogue Japan. Never mind its cover, another time perhaps, the beauty story by photographer David Slijper and makeup artists Georgi Sandev starring Esther Heesch is of primary concern. Titled, wait for it, “Pretty in Pink,” the beauty feature delves into the pink like it says on the tin. Esther for her part is beautiful as ever and would have little difficulty in turning the heads of Andrew McCarthy or for that matter James Spader.
