Time travel as we all know is not possible, strictly speaking. The laws of the universe, however have never been much concern for creative types working in film, TV, or high fashion. Alessandro Michele is one such creative who today charted a course back in time for the Gucci Fall 2017 advertising campaign starring amongst others Sedona Legge and Aline Dentler. The destination is round about in the 1950s and 1960s, the heyday of science fiction typified by the likes of Star Trek (1966-1967) and The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), both of which figure prominently in the campaign by photographer Glen Luchford and art director Christopher Simmonds. Michele’s retrofuturism is well at home amongst these canonical works of science fiction, but is sufficiently contemporary in his framing of his collection. Doubtful late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry could ever have imagined his TV series that was canceled after three seasons one day in the future would be used to sell luxury clothing. Time travel is in fact possible, but it just matters who is driving the Delorean.
