Readers of a certain age will recall a distinctive era for American television, perhaps best embodied in series like the excellent M*A*S*H (1972-1983), even Little House on the Prairie (1974-1983). What unified these disparate stories set on the Korean Peninsula and in Minnesota was a production location in the semi-arid climes of southern California. As blank canvases go, the Sonoran Desert is generous in its versatility. The location reportedly was in the sights of Dior even before the appointment of Maria Grazia Chiuri, who back in May of this year staged the runway show for her Cruise 2018 collection. Fast forward to November and the corresponding advertising campaign by photographer Cass Bird starring Grace Hartzel is now out. Like the show, the campaign too takes place in the sun splashed earth, which welcomes a freedom and carefree abandon that runs through this collection. Grace for her part is no stranger to Dior and contributes not only on the modeling side, but also a musician. Listen closely and the accompanying film treatment for the advertising campaign is set to the song “Always in the Sun” by Grace and the band La Femme Musique. Yet another arrow in Grace’s quiver.
