We are living in what is widely recognized as the Chinese Century, wherein the People’s Republic is the preeminent geopolitical force in the world. There is no getting around geography, but that is not to say Western cultural influences don’t have a role to play in this global game of chess. The December 2017 issue of Vogue China provides a case in point with an editorial starring American beauty Grace Elizabeth. Photographed by Camilla Åkrans and styled by Daniel Paudice, the story celebrates the romantic side of the 1980s business woman. Power suits and shoulder pads immediately spring to mind, but mercifully those sources of inspiration never make it off the mood board to muddy the waters in this story. On the contrary, this series eschews such campy trappings and instead goes for a relatable and thoroughly modern take on an era that after all gave us Working Girl (1988). The Chinese can go on holding American debt and producing nearly every consumable, but American culture and its beauties like Grace Elizabeth will endure.
