Life in the age of the Anthropocene is increasingly imperiled. That human impact on the environment has reached such a magnitude as to warrant its own geological era ought to give pause to anyone with a pulse. Decades ago tension between humanity and the planet lead the late Italian architect Paolo Soleri to create an urban settlement integrated into the wilds of the Sonoran desert in central Arizona called Arcosanti, which is of interest to this page as it is the site of the Miu Miu Spring / Summer 2018 advertising campaign starring amongst others Oumie Jammeh. “Our throw-away culture has made obsolescence the measure of its dynamism…The pernicious effect of planned obsolescence is the erosion of excellence,” said Soleri, who is quoted here by the Italian luxury brand for its latest campaign. Any brand worth its salt would strive to create a lasting impression of any kind, which is something Miuccia Prada has done consistently throughout her career. This campaign does not equivocate on its message, which finds resonance in Soleri’s life work, especially the magnificent Arcosanti, a living testament to what humans can achieve working with rather than against the environment. Back in October of last year Oumie walked in this runway show and today she stars in this corresponding campaign, her second major honor this season.
