“I felt like a celebrity,” says Kennah Lau when asked about shooting the Balenciaga Spring / Summer 2018 campaign. The feeling is understandable considering the production lengths the French house has gone for its latest advertising series. The portraits are meant to evoke paparazzi-induced frenzy near the point of sale. According to an official statement quoted by WWD, “Hired security guards accompany models on their shopping trips, a further twist in the fashion meta-reality which frames the customer as Balenciaga VIP.” To that end, Kennah is photographed by a well known street photographer, one of four hired for the campaign, outside the Balenciaga store at 336 rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. Whisked away from the probing lens by a broad-shouldered security professional, Kennah raises her left hand defensively as she looks back over her shoulder. Kennah is determined to make it inside the 300 square meter retail space, a temple to the brilliance of Demna Gvasalia, and who could possibly begrudge this Green Mountain State native her due? This is Kennah’s second campaign for Balenciaga following her appearance in the Fall 2017 campaign last year.
