The area on the stockroom shelf labeled authenticity is more often than not vacant. For all the advances of the 21st century, realness simply cannot be manufactured. An automobile can be blasted into low earth orbit, but authenticity cannot be gotten out of a stone in a SpaceX clean room. This conundrum isn’t something that troubles Binx, cover star of the Spring 2018 issue of i-D, she embodies the very notion of authenticity. In recent months important segments of the fashion industry have started to catch up with Binx. Vogue sang its praise of Binx last October and today i-D joins the chorus with the release of the second cover for what is being billed as The Radical Issue. Photographed by Zoë Ghertner, the cover and the corresponding celebrates Binx as “the supermodel with the best attitude and biggest personality.” Binx for her part is worthy of praise, not least for the place she has carved out for herself in fashion. “It all comes down to being aware,” Binx says. “Having the ability to understand and gain perspective. One of my favorite movements is the one stemming from self-knowledge. Making steps to better not only yourself, but the environment around you.” Binx gains valuable perspective from reading books, a fanciful activity if ever there was one in the hyper-truncated digital moment of ours. Above all, Binx is her own woman, which at face value is a radical proposition perfectly suited for a radical issue.
