NEW YORK — Speaking of Fashion Week this side of the Atlantic, Friday night Tomas Maier staged a one-season only runway show in Gotham for his Bottega Veneta Fall / Winter 2018 women’s and men’s collections. The occasion for this rare fortune in a climate where designers are fleeing New York like rats abandoning a sinking ship is the opening of the maison’s flagship at 740 Madison Avenue. Whatever it takes, really, to bring star power to this week is welcome and Maier certainly did not disappoint. “New Yorkers have a real bravery and boldness,” says Maier in the collection notes. “Nothing stops them. Nothing seems impossible.” This sentiment carried throughout the collection, which manifested in the dueling themes of city life / country life most New Yorkers of an elevated station have enjoyed for generations. The staging for the runway show at the American Stock Exchange included full scale multi-room interior furnished from the Bottega Veneta Furniture collection. This entire production made a real impression and it is a pity Bottega Veneta will not be around again in September apart from the luxury retail shopping experience it stages over on Madison Avenue. A half dozen models at Next including Binx, Aube Jolicoeur, Oumie Jammeh, Joshua BeringCallum Stoddart, and Piero Méndez featured on the runway. Look closely and Next’s own Saif Mahdhi can also be spotted, another win for New York.
