Traditionally white is the color for summer. The scarcity resulting from the mandated 98-day period falling in between the American holidays of Memorial Day and Labor Day makes the decision to wear anything but white look foolhardy. Still, there is something to be said for ignoring customs. Enter Ali Michael, modeling’s own enfant terrible, who appears in the 13 June 2018 issue of Vanity Fair Italia in an all-black story for summer. Shock! Photographed by Pamela Hanson and styled by Pina Gandolfi, Ali is off to the white sand beaches and clear waters of México’s Riviera Maya for a summer fashion story that will warm the hearts of anyone who painted their fingernails black and listened to Bauhaus in high school and later grew up to regularly holiday in Tulúm. Wearing black in the dead of summer is not simply the dream of every goth, but also is equally aspirational for those long bored with summer whites. A long-sleeved lace dress in black (pictured) is possible, let Ali Michael guide the way to your dirty black summer.
