The reverberations can still be felt. When Scottish designer Christopher Kane showed his collection for autumn back in February of this year, the notes struck were especially resonant with a pair of companion guides straight from the Sexual Revolution. A cursory glance through The Joy of Sex and More Joy of Sex by Chris Foss and Charles Raymond revealed Kane’s indebtedness to the energy and sloganeering of this pioneering guides. The clothes were sexy, they were daring in way that belies the cooler sexual climate precipitated by the courageous #MeToo movement. Emerging from this matrix, then is corresponding advertising campaign for Fall / Winter 2018 by photographer Alasdair McLellan starring Selena Forrest. Granted nothing quite screams unsexy like a denuded tree in the dead of winter, but all the same this campaign trades in sexual cues far more subtle even by 1970s standards. Heady stuff, truly. There is much to love in this campaign, not least for the casting and its commitment to an idiom of sex far more expansive than what competes for clicks across social media on a daily basis.
