PARIS — The stars of track and field are beautiful people in fact. Proclamations made over twenty years ago by a Glaswegian folk rock ensemble notwithstanding, athletics is a discipline worthy of further exploration in 2018. Enter Virgil Alboh, preeminent product designer for Nike and Louis Vuitton men’s artistic director. Abloh’s women’s Off-White™ Spring / Summer 2019 collection christened “Track and Field”  did what it says on the tin mashing up athletics and womenswear. Wedding disparities into clever new forms is what Alboh does best and on the evidence of Thursday evening’s showing, his latest women’s collection was no exception. The runway was painted to resemble a racing track in the middle of which race clocks and and scoreboard featured prominently announcing the names and nationalities of the evening’s lineup. Four models from across the Next global network including Grace Elizabeth, Aiden Curtiss, Katlin Aas, and Oumie Jammeh featured in the lineup along with eight world class athletes and gold medal winners. All told, Alboh’s collection looks to have succeeded where the waffle sole meets the road.
