Like much in life, victory is fleeting. For Anok Yai, however victory is ever present. In her first year since signing worldwide with Next, she has been the historic opener of the Prada Fall / Winter 2018 runway show, has featured in more than half dozen advertising campaigns for Prada, and has inked a beauty contract with Estée Lauder. Anok’s ascendency through the ranks of high fashion is nothing short of preternatural. Her meteoric rise is also the focus of an interview feature in the Winter 2018 issue of i-D in a story by photographer Angelo Pennetta and stylist Carlos Nazario. “When they told me I was opening Prada, me and my sister just started screaming,” she recalls in her interview with Lynette Nylander. “We were like, ‘Are you crazy?!’ I was so proud. I had only planned to give modeling six months, I was ready to go back to school.” A year on, Anok has by necessity shelved her biochemistry studies, becoming a doctor will have to wait another day. Anok has grander designs. “I want to be a role model, I want to make dark-skinned beauty an everyday thing. I don’t want to be otherworldly, I want it to be the norm.”
