Snipe all you like at Virgil Abloh, but the fact is the man creates new and exciting forms. Like any voracious consumer of culture, his work often references influences whose origins are never all that far below the surface. The brilliance of Abloh’s design lies in the synthesis for disparate forms so that it’s never stale, be it Off-Whiteor Louis Vuitton Men’s. This much is true in the newly unveiled advertising campaign for Spring / Summer 2019 starring an eclectic cast that includes Octavian and Warren Sossa. Photographed by Mohamed Bourouissa, the campaign reimagines Gustav Courbet’s “Artist’s Studio” with Abloh at its center. Densely layered, the campaign is rich in detail, the likes of which burnish the notion of Virgil Abloh as, what else, an artist.
