“I am the king,” declares Nick Cave over and over again in the opening salvo of the title track off the 1983 album Junkyard by The Birthday Party. Although heroin is never explicitly mentioned, Cave leaves little doubt that the powerful narcotic derived from poppies is what transfixes the song’s speaker. The intensity with which Cave performs that song in many ways distills the essence of the artist himself over the better part of four decades. Never mind smack, Nick Cave is king. The March 2019 issue of the Italian magazine ICON undoubtedly agrees with this estimation and duly fêtes King Cave in a story starring Tyler Blue Golden and Robert Semjonovs simply titled “Nick.” Page through the editorial and there can be only one Nick photographer Chris Colls has in his focus, front man of The Bad Seeds, a man possessed, pale with a shock of black hair. Tyler and Robert for their parts animate this larger than life figure way that feels new and fresh. Irreverent, timeless, the king has been crowned.
