Choose a color and the story will tell itself. Mostly this is true, but even the color pink, whose tale’s long been told (once masculine, now feminine, more profound than it is ever credited), cannot really hold a candle to the beauty and complexity of Abby Champion. Not even close! The May 2019 issue of Vogue España puts this theory to the test in an all-pink couture story by photographer Jens Ingvarsson and no surprise the American beauty comes out on top. Yes, the gowns are sufficiently magnificent, but it is the exuberance, the genuine glee of Abby that carries the day. Consider the two-page spread (pictured) in which Abby wears an empire dress of pleated tulle silk, by Giambattista Valli Haute Couture. That smile Abby gives readers cannot be forced any more than prêt-à-porter will never be couture. Pink is a rich color with an immense pedigree, no question, but in this particular instance its warmth is owed to the woman on the page, Abby Champion.
