The Caribbean not to mention the wider African diaspora is having a moment. Earlier this month Donald Glover and co splashed out with Guava Island, a musical film directed by Hiro Murai set in a mythic tropical island with Pan-African roots. Pyer Moss celebrated its founder Kerby Jean-Raymond’s early life biography with an advertising campaign cum meditation on distributed motherhood in the Haitian community. Arise Fashion Week in Lagos drew a bevy of in-demand talent including Ugbad Abdi. And Showtime airs Desus & Mero Thursday nights at 11 PM. Africa is popping! Esquire España all but said hold my cerveza for its May 2019 issue in an editorial starring Dominican model Daniel Morel shot on the streets of Higüey in the Dominican Republic. “Road Trip Caribeño,” as the story by photographer Sergey Vasilev and stylist Álvaro de Juan is called is something of a homecoming Daniel. Readers will no doubt delight in seeing Daniel laced up in Versace, Valentino, Missoni (pictured), and more. On reflection, this is more than a moment, this is the future.
