“This really has been a dream come true for me,” says Ugbad Abdi. “It’s surreal, amazing, crazy.” This summation of Ugbad’s has assumed a fairly evergreen glow with every passing milestone since she made her runway debut for Valentino back in January. Today, though that dream is undoubtedly Ugbad’s i-D cover shot by Zoë Ghertner. This is not just any cover, however. Not even close! In fact, says here i-D Nº356 Summer 2019 is the publication’s The Voice of a Generation Issue. Prescient, then is the cover choice of Ugbad, she herself a young woman of Muslim faith, a refugee from war torn Somalia, and truly an inspiration for a whole new generation. “I’m so lucky to have a voice, and I want to use it to challenge the stereotypes of Muslim women,” Ugbad says speaking with Jess Cole for her cover story interview. “People need to get to know Muslim women as individuals.” Given the meteoric rise of Ugbad, people will be getting plenty more such opportunities.
