Gratuitous layering, excessive volume…high fashion has not lost its penchant for the absurd. In a lot of ways as this industry endeavors to find its feet in a post everything world, showing a willingness to take risk is vital for survival. Dazed has long championed margins, the cutting edge where chaos reigns, and this commitment is more than evident in its Summer 2019 issue. One story in particular by photography duo Sean & Seng and stylist Robbie Spencer catches the eye. There is the casting, namely that of Ugbad Abdi, that already makes the story with its price of admission. What is more, however is the daring shown on the page that makes mention of the story on this page more than just another opportunity for self promotion. There is the layering, yes, and the outsize tailoring, plenty of that, all throughout the editorial aptly titled “Spellbound.” But it is the poise and at times even genuine mirth shown by Ugbad that makes this story really work. And if readers needed any further convincing, take in that toothy grin (pictured) Ugbad flashes wearing a winged wool hat by Loewe and an asymmetrical top and tailored bustier by Givenchy. Spellbinding!
