“It took a lot of time to gain people’s trust in the fact I know what I’m going to do, what I’m good at and what I want.” Anyone reading, anyone listening, pay heed to what Billie Eilish is saying, she knows what is up! With over one billion streams on Spotify alone, Billie clearly grasps the myriad complexities that go into achieving success on her own terms. Currently in the midst of a world tour that will see her performing two evenings in New York beginning tonight at Pier 17 and tomorrow night at Radio City Music Hall, Billie today claimed her first ever Vogue cover for the July 2019 issue of Vogue Australia. Photographed by Jesse Lizotte, the cover pictures the cultural sensation wearing a roll-neck sweater by Balenciaga and a custom crown by Heart of Bone. Although clothing is a huge part of Billie’s persona, this is not to suggest any sort of shallowness. Far from it. “I really don’t want to waste my platform. I’m trying not to but I think all of us in the spotlight – or whatever you want to call it – can be more vocal about climate change and things that need to be talked about. I still think I can do more,” she says and as ever should be believed. If there is any takeaway from this exercise, then it is that Billie Eilish is steering this spaceship that will take us all into tomorrow.
