“Adaptable and free. Modern and elegant.” These four entries are part of the word cloud that is the collaboration between Birkenstock and Valentino and that word cloud is raining down a whole lot of Lili Sumner in the newly released advertising campaign by photographer Roe Ethridge and stylist Haley Wollens. The world was given its first glimpse of the collaboration earlier this year during the men’s Valentino Fall / Winter 2019 runway show. Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli never tires of adapting his design to meet the needs of consumer today. “To me, Valentino is a couture house, but to be relevant today, it has to be more inclusive and open to new opportunities,” said Piccioli speaking with Vogue back in January of this year. “That’s my idea, always.” A collaboration with the German shoe maker founded in 1774 would then seem only logical. Two adaptations of the classic Arizona sandal in red and black are available and with Lili fronting the campaign, sales of both are certain to be fleet of foot.
