“A little bit of imperfection is the new perfection.” The words of Donatella Versace from back in February of this year have gotten plenty of mileage, not least because of how unexpected they were. The house of Versace after all is a thing of speed and beauty, a place where imperfection would simply wither and die on the maison’s polished floors. In relation to an autumn women’s collection that channeled the myriad spirits of 1990s grunge music, the characterization of a bit of imperfection is spot on, albeit in a most luxurious way befitting of Versace. With this in mind, the corresponding advertising campaign by Steven Meisel starring Anok Yai is perfection through and through. There are no perceptible imperfections at work in this campaign, certainly not in the casting or for that matter anything creative details outside of unfinished masonry and tattered upholstery. Nope, this is a Versace campaign, ersatz grunge and all, and Anok is its lead.
