The importance of an origin story cannot be overstated. Provenance is everything, which is why the November 2019 issue of British Vogue devotes much of its pages to celebrating the beginnings of a coterie of leading models of color. “I look around now and see all these incredible women, a whole new generation who don’t even know about that struggle, or what it was like to be the only ethnic girl in a lineup of 40 at a show,” writes editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. “I thought how much the fashion landscape has shifted and how – from catwalks to advertising – the black model is no longer so sidelined.” Enter Lineisy Montero, Anok Yai, and Ugbad Abdi, three such models who are anything but sidelined, who feature in the cover story by photographer Nick Knight. Titled “A Certain Romance,” this couture story set in the rolling hills of London’s Richmond Park assumes an otherworldly disposition from the off. Fantastic, dreamlike, none of these images however compare to the entrances Lineisy, Anok, and Ugbad made into high fashion. Theirs is a thing of dreams, a certain romance if you will.
