“That’s insane,” says Ugbad Abdi holding up her cracked iPhone 6 displaying an Instagram of the first of her four Vogue Arabia October 2019 covers photographed by the late Peter Lindbergh. This touching moment with arguably one of the industry’s most in-demand models of the moment was captured backstage in Paris late last month following the Lanvin Spring / Summer 2020 runway show. Ugbad was overcome with emotion as she saw the covers publicly shared for the first time. This was one of many touching scenes from the attritional prêt-à-porter season that closed just last week, but also quite possibly the most poignant given Lindbergh’s passing in early September. The lasting impression Lindbergh made on the world of fashion photography, not to mention popular culture more broadly is inestimable. It was after all Lindbergh who provided the very language to describe a group of beautiful girls in the 1990s as supermodels. That mastery of the medium never flagged over the decades and certainly did not for this story, one of the final projects in his lifetime. Ugbad is a beauty for this era, 2019 and beyond.
