Twenty years into the Chinese Century and the People’s Republic continues to flex. Thin skinned as it can be, China if anything looks forward and the February 2020 issue of Vogue China is no exception. Unveiled last week, the cover by photographer Leslie Zhang features the industry’s leading Chinese models including none other than Tang He wearing a taffeta cape with cherry red, fuchsia, and pink bows, overtop a cherry red velvet dress, all Valentino. Imperial, majestic, these are two words that come to mind when describing the cover and corresponding story. What is far more arresting, however is the cover’s aesthetic, which so clearly evokes the grandiosity of the nation under the leadership of XI Jinping. Tang He for her part is up for the occasion, after all it’s her first ever Vogue cover.
