The sixth mass extinction that began roughly 11 thousand years ago at the end of the last Ice Age never ended. In fact, scientists believe it is accelerating with climate change and is responsible for a rate of species extinction that is 1000 times higher than before humans dominated the planet. Humanity’s touch has been rather heavy, to put it very mildly. It isn’t all doom, however, not according to Virgil Abloh anyhow, who last week unveiled his Louis Vuitton men’s Spring / Summer 2020 advertising campaign starring amongst others Delfin Finley and Macky Dabo. The former, readers will recall, closed the show in June of last year, whereas the latter was discovered mere days before the campaign shoot. Photographed by Viviane Sassen in Morocco, the campaign titled “Footprints” includes imagery and motifs which are reportedly meant to “represent the positive human footprint on planet earth.” Exactly what a positive human footprint on planet earth looks like apart from, say, Greta Thunberg leaving tracks on a sandy beach is an open question. Conceivably those favorable impressions would no doubt include the creative endeavors of Virgil Abloh. To that end, Delfin and Macky are charges in this campaign to leave a positive human footprint—if only that would also save the bees.
