Last week a sweep of Grammy Awards, this week a sweep of Vogue covers, this is a normal haul for no one but Billie Eilish. The timing could not have been any better for Billie, who is the subject of three leading photographers including Ethan James Green (pictured), Harley Weir, and Hassan Hajjaj, not to mention a precocious young illustrator for a fourth digital cover. Billie’s 49-date Where Do We Go? world tour doesn’t kick off until next month, but in the meantime readers are afforded an opportunity to catch up with her in audience with Vogue. As ever, she is remarkably poised and takes the occasion in stride.“Maybe people see me as a rule-breaker because they themselves feel like they have to follow rules, and here I am not doing it,” Billie says speaking with Vogue’s Rob Haskell. “That’s great, if I can make someone feel more free to do what they actually want to do instead of what they are expected to do. But for me, I never realized that I was expected to do anything. I guess that’s what is actually going on—that I never knew there was a thing I had to follow. Nobody told me that shit, so I did what I wanted.” That Billie has pursued a path entirely her own is perhaps unremarkable, but that she has done so in service of an immense creative vision is. The entertainment business swats aside countless talents year after year, but not Billie. She has ostensibly built her career in bedroom studio together with her older brother Finneas O’Connell and now has a fistful of Vogue covers as receipts.
