Meanwhile during the sixth mass extinction attention turns to the March 2020 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, which broke Monday and features Anok Yai photographed by Sølve Sundsbø. Exactly what is sexy about desiccated landscape remains to be seen, but if anything the denuded earth is a finely taut canvas for this cover story celebrating this season’s sharpest tailoring and boldest silhouettes. The shapes from this story styled by George Cortina could not be more pronounced than the cover in which Anok holds her hands up to her temples wearing a ballroom gown by Balenciaga. Is this gesture one of anguish for the smoking ruin? Or is it defiance in the face of overwhelming odds? Given Anok’s rapid career trajectory from university student to global face, it surely is the latter.
